A view from one of our pupils

The following is a letter written to the children in Year 2 before they joined us in September. Oscar was one of our House Captains.

Welcome to St John's!

My name is Oscar and I am currently a Year 5 pupil at St John the Baptist School (SJB).  I want to write to tell you a bit about the school before your arrival in September. First of all, I hope you are all well during these different times and you are looking forward to coming to SJB. During my time here, I have gone to school plays, fairs, sports tournaments and lots more. SJB is a school where we do lots of learning but we also do exciting activities. I hope that you enjoy it.

The school has a playground, football field, climbing frame and basketball hoops, so you can have lots of outdoor fun during break times and lunch. You can enjoy the playground whether you would like to just sit down and read a book or want to be sporty and active. We also have the Paradise Garden which you might have heard about or seen. One class is allowed in at a time and it's a great place to relax. You can even win a ‘lucky last play’ at the end of the day if your class is well behaved.

I always like the Big Picture lessons which are a mix of history, art and science and sometimes we even get to dress up! In Year 3, after we finished learning about the Ancient Greeks, we had a Greek Day where we dressed as Greeks and did lots of Greek themed activities. It was really fun!

At SJB we have lots of different clubs including football, orchestra, tennis, basketball and much more. We also have netball and football teams that play against other schools. Another thing we have is music lessons which include violin, piano, guitar, recorder and choir which you can sign up for.

Like Hampton Wick, we have a school council. To be elected for school council you have to make a short speech about how you would make the school better for example, fundraising activities, cake sales etc and then the rest of your class vote on who they would like to be the school council member for their class. It’s a chance to change the school.

I can’t wait for you to join our magnificent school and all it has to offer.
